AFRICAN QUEEN Crew Profile
CAPTAIN JOHN WHITE
Captain John White takes great pleasure in welcoming you aboard ‘AFRICAN QUEEN.’ Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, ‘Whitey’ is an explorer by nature. He will thrill you with tales of his many travels: trips across the Australian outback on motorcycles, a 63-day canoe trip down the Amazon, sailboat racing on San Francisco Bay and along the California coast and Mexico, or the stories of his many years exploring Central and South America by land and sea.
Whitey’s background is in electrical contracting and electronics. After ten years in San Francisco, he set sail with his soon-to-be wife, Maxine, down to Panama, through the canal and into the Caribbean. Since arriving in the British Virgin Islands, Whitey and Max have operated crewed charter boats as a team for over 10 years. Recently, he completed a trans-Atlantic crossing which brings his blue water miles total to 55,000.
Whitey holds an RYA Yacht Master Ocean License and has been a PADI Dive Instructor for 15 years. He has a passion for teaching scuba diving and encourages guests to explore this new adventure with him as instructor. Whitey’s open and confident personality sets everyone at ease as he safely guides AFRICAN QUEEN’s guests on their sailing adventure.

CHEF Maxine White
Originally from the land-locked state of Utah, Maxine had never been sailing until she met Whitey in San Francisco. She quickly took to it and before long she quit her job in the San Francisco Financial District to sail away under the Golden Gate Bridge with Whitey. Many sea miles later they were married at Cane Garden Bay, Tortola. Max has since completed over 45,000 blue water miles.
Whitey and Max have worked in the charter industry for over 10 years hosting over 2000 guests. After a few years in the BVI’s, they spent two and a half years chartering the San Blas Islands and Panama during which they completed 18 transits of the Panama Canal with guests. Max’s treats from the galley are a combination of the cuisines of the countries she has visited and explored always utilizing fresh local ingredients. While living in Australia, she owned her own personal chef and catering company and is a major award winner at a Caribbean boat show culinary competition.
Maxine is a PADI Dive Master who is as comfortable leading a group of divers or snorkelers in the water or working the sails of a boat as she is in the galley. Both Max and Whitey speak Spanish, and Whitey is comfortable with Portuguese and German.

AFRICAN QUEEN Testimonials
“It was possibly our best vacation! Whitey and Max is very special crew, great people with whom we all bonded very quickly. They go out of their way to make everyone feel at home in their home.”
“The boat was perfect and exceeded our expectations—and we are picky. Whitey was always trying to please (never had a Captain so willing to move the boat to find the “perfect” spot). The food was ALWAYS delicious and excelled in presentation!).

How did you enjoy your cruising vacation?
Absolutely fantastic trip! All 6 members of our group loved it! Especially Whitey taking us to Anegada and walking that deserted beach and drinks at the Cattle Wreck bar, driving the island, and a fantastic lobster dinner on our last night. We had planned the whole itinerary and Whiitey threw that in our last day.
How would you describe your Captain and crew? Were they courteous? Attentive? Knowledgeable?
This was our first experience chartering a yacht, and I was a bit apprehensive about how we would all get on for a week in close quarters. Whitey, Max and Taylor were magic. They were all of the above and then some.
Tell me about your meals? Did the menus meet your group’s expectations?
The meals Max created were truly outstanding, not only in their flavors, but the presentation and table settings and ambience were wonderful. I was amazed at the quality and presentations created and served from such a small galley. Max was incredibly organized, which kept the flows of the meals on track.
How did you find the pace and the itinerary of your vacation? Absolutely perfect! Our daughters had taken sailing camps with Action Quest in the BVI’s several times, and communicated to Whitey where they wanted to take us prior to the sail. Whitey accommodated all the requests and ran a tight ship without being “up-tight”! There was never a dull moment, but also, there were plenty of opportunities to just relax, sun and read.
Additional comments:
We can’t say enough about the crew. Their sensitivity to our needs (and wants!) was excellent! Their wealth of knowledge of all aspects of the BVI’s and diving truly made me, the Mom, feel that my family and my daughters’ friends were in an extremely safe environment, without being overwhelmed with too many details. It was such a great environment to be adventurous and have a “go for it” time!
The Virgin Islands, June, 2010
“...absolutely FANTASTIC week.. Bottom line, what makes a or breaks a sail like this is the crew, and Whitey, Max and Taylor definitely MADE IT!”
- June 2010 charter
It was the most fabulous trip!!! The crew is amazing, and I wish I was there right now. There was nothing left undone or unattended to....we loved every minute!
Fondly, Frances
February 2010
To give you an idea of how much everyone liked the trip, read the following excerpt of an email I received from one of my nephews:
“Well, I have no idea how to even write the appropriate thank you note for the trip. The French would call something like this trip ‘halucinant’, which loosely translated is something so good you think it’s a hallucination. And everyone is on the same page regarding that. To quote George, whom I spoke with yesterday about a return trip: ‘I would definitely pitch in money to go again next year, hell, next week’.
So everyone had a tremendous time and I think the feeling was unanimous that this was our best Thanksgiving ever! My Mom enjoyed it a lot and was delighted to see everyone having a good time.
