ASIA Crew Profile
Capt. Paul Johnson, (age 42) was previously the owner and director of an engineering company in London that offered specialist consultancy advice to European companies. In 1997, at the age of 30, Paul decided on a change in direction and bought Ilala to turn his hobby of yacht sailing and racing into a career.
His yacht charter company has now been operating in South East Asia for 12 years and is one of the leading charter yachts in this area. During this time Paul has built up a wealth of knowledge of this area and is now recognised as one of the authorities on sailing in this region. Paul is the co-author of the Andaman Sea Pilot. He also provides specialist guide services to super yachts visiting the more remote islands in this area. Paul has excellent contacts at government and local level throughout the region which is an essential part of running quality yacht charters in this area.
Paul has over 30 years of sailing and racing experience and 12 years of charter experience. He holds an RYA Yachtmaster certificate. Paul is a qualified sailing instructor, teaching beginner to yachtmaster level. Paul is a highly experienced dive leader/instructor with over 3000 dives in South East Asia. Paul speaks English, French, Chichewa, Thai, passable Bahasa and some Burmese. He has a BS in Physics and an MS in Computer Networking.
Chef Debbie Johnson (age 39) was previously a chartered accountant and the financial manager of a manufacturing company in her home city of Durban, South Africa, before being lured out to sea by Paul. Debbie is now a charter chef who specialises in seafood, Thai food, a variety of home baked breads and is equally at home reparing a wide range of international cuisine.
Debbie now has 12 years of sailing experience, both in chartering, racing and yacht delivery as 1st mate. She is also a qualified Master and Rescue diver. Debbie speaks English, Afrikaans, plus some German, Thai, Bahasa and some Burmese.
Paul and Debbie’s 100 ft sailing yacht “Asia” offers adventure charters in the Mergui Archipelago of Myanmar (Burma), the Andaman Islands (India), Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. They have an unparalleled knowledge of the area as a yacht charter destination.
Over the years we have had a wide range of prestigious clients including survey charters for the UNDP, Global Environment Fund (GEF) and the Indian Government. We have also run charters for the Myanmar Government and helped fashion mogul Kenzo catch a huge sailfish! We have excellent contacts at government and local level throughout the region which is an essential part of running quality yacht charters in this area. Most importantly, Paul and Debbie own the vessel which means that they put in 110% into their charters aboard Asia.
Paul and Debbie are an extremely experienced charter couple who have worked together successfully for 12 years in the charter industry. They will make your charter enjoyable, adventurous, memorable and safe.
Together with 3 additional experienced local crew members (2 deckhands and a hostess), the crew of SY Asia form a very professional team.
