CARL LINNE Crew Profile
Captain: Gregory Chivers
Greg has a true passion for the nautical environment. This ensures guests are always treated to an enthusiastic captain who is always excited at weighing anchor and raising sail. Greg has already sailed over 12 000 miles in his first year aboard Carl Linne and this shall build considerably as Carl Linne cruises through the Pacific.
Raised in a nautical family in his native Australia, there was never a doubt in Greg’s mind that he would work with boats. Greg gained a University Degree in Naval Architecture and worked in a ship design office for a year. Greg worked for a number of years as a tugboat captain in construction and salvage based out of Sydney, before moving into yachting and has crewed exclusively on sailing yachts ever since. Since joining the yachting industry first as engineer and then moving to Captain, Greg has proven competent and very well liked by his crew and guests alike. Greg has developed an astute understanding of the standards and expectations of charter guests and acquired an excellent reputation during his previous position as captain onboard Magdalus Terzo and now again on Carl Linne.
Greg has completed many major yacht races, including the infamous Sydney-Hobart race, and has cruised his own 43-foot yacht ‘Minka’ throughout SE Asia and the Indian Ocean, searching for the ultimate surfing locations. Whether sailing, surfing or simply sitting on anchor Greg loves being on the water. Greg prides himself in providing guests with an exciting sailing experience coupled with excellent personalised service.
Chef: Jinny Chivers
Jinny has set clear goals for herself, to work hard and earn a living doing the things she enjoys. That is, cooking, travelling, the life of the sea and meeting new people – the very definition of a happy charter chef. Now with four years experience cooking on busy charter yachts between 80 and 135 feet, Jinny knows she has found the perfect career. Jinny has provisioned, cooked and built up her sea miles in the Mediterranean, North East Coast of America and the Caribbean. Building on her background in catering as a Conference and Banqueting Sales Manager, Jinny has taken cookery courses in Australia – Seafood cookery with celebrity chef Guillaume Brahimi – and a month long galley cookery course at the Penny Roberts School in Mallorca. She also has a UK certificate in Food and Hygiene and is a trainer of silver service. She did work in several Thai, fusion and top hotel restaurants while earning a BA with honours from the University of West England.
To add to Jinny’s formal training she always jumps at the opportunity to learn new tricks from other chefs, such as spending a day with a top pastry chef or working a day in a busy Caribbean restaurant. From Jinny’s freelancing experience, she has become increasingly flexible to suit the differing requirements of different charter guests and she is also familiar with catering to various dietary needs such as dairy free, vegetarian, Aitkin’s, low fat, and You are What You Eat. Jinny enjoys keeping fit by diving, sea kayaking, swimming and attempting to wake board. The owner of a 90 foot sloop sings her praises, “Apart from her delightful warm personality, Jinny is a fantastic cook and her creativity in the kitchen is without question.”
Mate: Matuanui Fao
Matuanui's name in his local Tahitian langauge means "God Almighty" but generally he is just called Matu. He has worked on and off Carl Linne since September 2009 doing deliveries and helping with maintenance and more recently he has become the permanent mate onboard. Previous to working on yachts, Matu was trained in Montreal as massage therapist, working in hospitals and then in the Tahitian five star hotels. The life with the sea was one of his other passions which he chose to pursue.
Matu has a long list of water sports skills - sailing, kitesurfing, surfing, diving, wakeboarding, paddle boarding and outrigger canoeing. If Matu is not on, in or under the water he will be more than happy to serenade you with one of his grandfathers songs on the ukulele or some Jack Johnson on the guitar. Matu is wonderfully relaxed always with a happy and enthusiastic attitude.
