CHATEAU Crew Profile

Captain: David Peterson:

Born 1984, Years Sailed: 10, Years Chartering: 7

David, born and raised on the Oregon coast, has been connected to the ocean his entire life. His family spent all recreation time on the water. From salmon fishing in the Pacific, sturgeon fishing on rivers and water sports on lakes; he has been behind the wheel of many a watercraft from a young age.

During university a fluke of luck sent him for a year to the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix, where he fell in love with warm waters and life outside civilization.  After graduating he moved to St. Thomas where he became a parasailor and started his diving career.  Two years later an opportunity to deliver a 36’ monohull from Maui to Washington arose. Soon after the month long delivery he found himself surfing the waves and enjoying the Aloha back on Maui. Having never seen lava he traded Maui for the Island of Fire (big island) and kept himself busy as a manta ray dive master by night, and lava tour guide by day.     One spring while kayaking with the humpback whales he decided it would be great to see them in their feeding grounds of Alaska. Three months later he was sport fishing salmon and halibut side by side with the majestic humpbacks. But as the fishing season came to an end the humpbacks left for warmer water and so did David.  Ending up on sunny St. John he found himself running dive trips for a busy resort and behind the wheel of a classic wooden trawler Cruzing St. John and the BVI’s. While in Tortola looking to purchase a monohull he was offered 1st mate on a mega catamaran and so he spent the next year chartering the BVI’s and the entire Caribbean from St. Croix to Grenada.        Missing a homeport, David set his hook on the east end of St. Thomas and took the reigns of Chateau, allowing him to create the charter of a lifetime for his guests. With his extensive knowledge of the Virgin Islands David can create the perfect charter tailored to you. From snorkeling remote reefs to white sandy beaches all to yourself, David on Chateau will create the charter vacation you will reminisce about for years to come.

Freelance Chef/First Mate: Thryn Shoup

Thryn grew up in Athens Ohio, but has been drawn to the sea and sailing from an early age.  As a young adult Thryn has travelled and worked extensively in hospitality and restaurant industry in tourist rich locations.  Thryn’s unique travelling experiences have allowed her to develop a variety of cooking techniques and expand her culinary repertoire in a manner that is sure to leave guests delighted  and excited for their next delicious meal.   Thryn has a natural knack for making good food.  Her interest in making food from scratch lead her to work in two bakeries as well as a café that specialized in using only local ingredients in everything from ketchup to cheese. She has carried those lessons with her throughout her chef career.  Her attention to detail in taste and appearance landed her a job as chef in a Moroccan kebob restaurant where she learned many Middle Eastern recipes.  Though she is proficient in most styles of food, her favorite is Thai .  Having been vegetarian and gluten free at various points of her life she is capable of accommodating these and other dietary restrictions.        Thryn’s prior roles as stewardess, mate and sous chef aboard charter yachts in the Caribbean has led her to branch out as a free lance charter chef in US/BVI area.  She looks forward joining Captain David aboard Chateau for Full Board Charters.  Guests are sure to be pleased by Thryn’s culinary talents as she prepares delicious meals and snacks that highlight fresh local ingredients found right here in the Caribbean.

Additional Credentials:

STCW

Medical Safety

First Aid and crowd control

Wilderness EMT

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Thryn is Chateau's first choice when contracting a free lance chef for full board charters. Although Thryn gives priority to Chateau booking calendar, there may be instances when she is not available to join a charter booked on short notice.

Chateau would then contract another freelance chef, which we would be select based on guests dining preferences and needs.

"How anyone could take five short days and turn it into memories and inspiration that will last a lifetime is beyond me...but you managed to do it, effortlessly!

This trip, hastily planned and desperately needed could not have been more relaxing or better suited for the state of mind I was hoping to achieve.  Your flexibility, planning, and forethought made it simple and yet elegant.

Thryn your attention to meals and our overall dinning needs was impeccable.

David your attention to our travel, recreational, and party needs were right on point.

Together you make a great team and create a beautiful experience.

Thank you for everything!

Un abrazo, Joe

Dear David and Thryn,

David and Thryn,

It's rare in my life that I am left without adequate words to express myself, but here I am.

We planned this trip without any understanding of what it could turn out to be and you both

managed to bring together an adventure I never would have had the foresight to create.

We both have had such an amazing time and felt such comfort and welcome in your home!

My motto on a good time has always been "Good food & plenty of booze," going forward that

will now include "Good food, plenty of booze, & Chateau."

Thanks for everything,

Matt & Matt

Letter sent to Broker re Captain only April 16 – April  21, 2009

We had a wonderful trip on CHATEAU. Doug, the captain, was very knowledgeable and extremely pleasant. He provisioned our food choices that I had sent via email and helped us learn how to use everything in the kitchen as well as proper use of the heads. He was extremely warm to the kids and made great suggestions as to our itinerary of sailing. The six of us had no problem with the spaciousness of CHATEAU and loved swimming off the boat.  We ate out on two occasions, both for dinner, and Doug was a pleasant addition to our dinner. As a added extra, Doug offered to make pancakes and bacon for us for breakfast one day.  We hope to go on another trip in the future. Thank you for your help.  - Joanne Chang
