TESTIMONIALS

Barry: Having decided that we were going to take up the Trawler Lifestyle, my wife and I looked for a worthy vessel and experienced Captain for an educational charter.  When we found M/V Commander, having seen her at the US Powerboat Show in Annapolis the year before, we already knew that she would be comfortable, safe and a great platform for our objectives.  Though her owner, Barry Kallander, was only known to us by remote reputation, we were to learn that he was the perfect captain for our adventure, as well.

To start with Barry was most helpful in our planning of the vacation/educational journey.  His intimate knowledge of the waters from Newport to Boston, dating back to his own childhood on the water and his many years of sailing, powerboat cruising, and teaching, allowed us to build the perfect plan.  He was open to helping us meet our needs for training including extending steaming and overnight steaming, as well as our desire to incorporate sight-seeing, whale-watching, and even entertaining of guests.  His insight regarding the advantages and disadvantages, costs and benefits, of various ports of call was invaluable.  By the time we arrived in Jamestown to meet him, we were thoroughly prepared with an outstanding agenda for a great week.

In every possible respect our expectations were thereafter exceeded once our journey began.  It included stops on Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Provincetown, Cutty Hunk and Jamestown; and incorporated overnight steaming under the stars, lobster meals onboard, fishing and fresh-caught dinners, sight-seeing, hiking, biking, museums, and best of all… a spectacular whale watching session surrounded by a large pod as close as 50 meters from our vessel.  We also enjoyed many hours of in-depth education from a USCG-licensed Captain, who is both teacher and expert ship-handler.   More than just that, Barry also was a great companion to us, which was a huge relief given our concerns about spending a full week in very close quarters with someone whom we had never met.

In summary, I can say that I cannot imagine a more fulfilling and enjoyable experience.  It “sealed the deal” for us.  Upon return home we signed papers for the construction of our own trawler.  We certainly can unhesitatingly recommend the a Charter in M/V Commander with Barry Kallander, whether you are looking for the an educational experience, a recreational experience, or both.
