DESTINY Crew Profile

S/Y DESTINY
Captain Gunnar Williamson, 30, American
Chef Megan Puorro, 28, American
When Gunnar decided to be a yacht captain he went right to the top, training with a winning ‘Sydney to Hobart Race’ sailing instructor for over a year. He has probably spent as much of his life in or on the water as on dry land. As a professional wakeboarder and water ski instructor he competed on the national and world championship level and is a licensed rescue diver.
Gunnar and Megan have worked together as captain and chef for more than 6 years. They did 25 weeks of charter for 8 – 10 guests on a 60’ catamaran in the BVI’s and ran a 110’ Cheoy Lee chartering in the Bay Islands of Honduras. They have crewed on two private yachts, running an 80’ Northern Marine Trawler in New Zealand’s Bay Islands and Australia’s Whitsunday Islands and a 100’ Monte Fino in Sarasota, Florida.
Gunnar did spend enough time indoors to earn a Master of International Business degree from Bond University in Australia and drew on that to start a successful tourism company in Honduras called ‘Sealegs Aquatic Adventures.’ He enjoys teaching sailing and encourages guests to try all the water sports DESTINY offers, ever mindful of safety. Gunnar and Megan LOVE having children of all ages on board and planning all types of shore-based activities from sand castle building to hiking to entertain them. Gunnar warns, “Parents beware, Megan is always sneaking them treats!”
Building on years in the restaurant industry, Megan did further training under a charter chef to prepare for a career in yachting. She has cooked for a wide variety of guests and learned very diverse cuisines to create menus to fit guest preferences. She loves to cook with the highest quality, freshest ingredients she can get her hands on to prepare fresh, healthy meals. Megan’s personal favorite cuisine is Italian, and thanks to her grandmother she has family recipes that never cease to please a crowd. She sure pleased the crowd of judges at the June 2012 charter show in Newport, Rhode Island. She won first prize in the chowder competition. Not bad for a girl from Texas making chowder fo the first time!
A spirit of adventure for exploring remote regions of the world has taken Gunnar and Megan to Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, Galapagos, Alaska, Central America - and given them countless campfire stories to share. They are very easy-going, friendly and fun. Through years of entertaining, life experiences and travels they can relate to all types of people and situations. “We absolutely guarantee a fantastic experience no matter what a guest’s taste may be. Whether you are an active and adventurous soul or just want to set sail with a good book, a good time will always be had by all!”

January 2013, one week Bequia to Grenada
We got home last night and had a wonderful time. The boat itself was great!
Gunnar and Megan did a great job. Megan is a great cook and has a lovely manner about her. Gunnar was a CAPTAIN! Very nice and eager to please. We all felt very safe with him. They were both also a lot of fun.
We covered 8 islands in eight days, so we were active. We did have Christmas winds but we got used to it. All said we had awesome time on Destiny and we would definitely book them again.
