DREAM Crew Profile

Butch Vogelsang - Captain

Growing up on the east end of Long Island, New York, going to sea was an easy decision to make for Captain Butch, as the area supported a vibrant commercial fishery industry. As a youngster, opportunities in the fleet were abundant and Butch worked his way through school on various boats. After an enlistment in the U.S. Coast Guard as a petty officer Butch returned to the private sector as captain on tug boats, high speed commuter vessels, oil rig support vessels and fishing boats. Since joining the yachting industry Butch has had the privilege to command several large yachts, including the Oceanfast "Floridian" and Feadship "Charisma" prior to assuming command of "Dream". Butch enjoys classical music, Literature, and adventuring.

Luke Hammond- First Officer

Luke entered the professional yachting industry in 2004 with a background draped in travel and hospitality experience from all over the globe. He joined Dream as First Officer late 2008, but also holds his Master 3000 ton license, which makes Luke a valuable asset to the team. Luke's vast cruising experience and level of licensing makes him the perfect person for all of your activities. So if you would like to get out on the water or if you are looking for a new place to explore, he will be more than happy to assist you in making sure your time on board Motor Yacht Dream is one to remember.

Sam McLaren – Chief Engineer

Originally from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, and having a father who is a Captain and Engineer, Sam knew from a young age that he would make living on the high seas! After completing a diesel mechanics apprenticeship and gaining his first merchant marine engineering qualification at the age of 21, Sam decided to change from the commercial industry, to the yachting industry in 2001 and hasn’t looked back since. Sam enjoys all outdoor activities including, snowboarding and wake boarding, hiking, fishing camping and many more. Sam looks forward to travelling more of the world, experiencing different cultures, meeting new people and embarking on many new adventures

Dave Rens - Second Engineer

Dave is from Durban South Africa, but now calls Fort Lauderdale, Florida home. Underwater photography and diving initially brought him to Fort Lauderdale to obtain his first yachting position. It was not long before he gravitated towards the engineering field and discovered his new passion. As the years progressed, he graduated in engineering with special skills in AV technology. Dave has been involved in engineering for fourteen years and has spent more than three of those as second engineer on Dream. Whenever time allows, Dave enjoys being the master chef behind his BBQ, improving his golf score and training for triathlons.

Jeff Kent - Chef

Jeff started his professional culinary career at the age of 13 working at The Cog Railway on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, where his father was a steam locomotive engineer. By the age of 17 he had his first introduction to classical French Cuisine and by 21 had moved to New York City to help open the newly built "Waters Edge Restaurant". Before starting his yachting career Jeff worked at some of Americas finest restaurants and resorts including Arizona 206 and Gotham Bar and Grill in Manhattan; Mille Fluer in Rancho Santa Fe, California; The Doral Resort and Spa in Telluride, Colorado and The Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana. Jeff will endeavour to do his absolute best in making sure you will enjoy your stay on board, if you have any special requests feel free to pop in to the galley at any time! When not cooking up a feast in the galley you will probably find Jeff hiking; biking; skiing or expanding his food and wine knowledge by immersing himself in the local culture.

Amber Sowder – Chief Stewardess

Originally from northwest Montana, Amber is an enthusiast of all activities outdoors. Having grown up in the Rocky Mountains Amber loves camping, hiking, fishing and horseback riding. Amber moved to South Florida 8 years ago and instantly fell in love with the ocean and has been working in yachting ever since. She met her husband Sam four years ago while working aboard yachts and has been very fortunate to be able to share the experience and joy of travelling and working together all over the world with him.

Katie Brewer – 2nd Stewardess

Katie was born and raised in Columbus Ohio, and went to a French immersion grade school. Prior to joining the yachting industry, Katie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature and worked in healthcare counselling. Working in a fine dining restaurant Katie was able to gain invaluable hospitality experience, and further her knowledge in French cuisine and culture. Katie enjoys yoga, film, and when time permits a good book. Katie is a bright and eager member of our team here on Dream, and looks forward to making your stay onboard a memorable one.

Petrina Dunn – Stewardess

Our lovely Petrina was born in rural Australia. Prior to joining the yachting industry, she has enjoyed travelling and working around the world, with a few stops in London and Canada. Working in a chic London bar, Petrina learned the art of mixing cocktails and is always happy to serve guests delightful libations. Through yachting, she has visited Europe, Alaska, Central America, and the Caribbean. Petrina has been working on board Dream since last August, providing warm and welcoming service to all who come aboard. In her spare time Petrina enjoys snowboarding and has found a new passion in surfing.

Jessica Mellington - Stewardess

Jessica was born and raised in Ballarat, Australia. She has a love for exploring and travelling the world visiting beautiful countries like New Zealand, Spain, Greece, Japan and Canada. This is Jessica's first boat, and she is looking forward to sailing to new destinations while delivering stellar service to all guests on board. In her free time, Jessica enjoys snowboarding, surfing, and snorkelling.

Berin Thomas - Bosun

Berin was born in the capital city of Wellington, New Zealand. With his infinite love of the ocean and sense of adventure it is easy to see why he chose to pursue a career in the yachting industry. Berin brings a wealth of knowledge to the Dream team as Bosun, with over six years experience in the yachting industry. When not yachting he can be found travelling far off exotic locations searching for the perfect wave or snowy mountain, to hone his skills as an avid surfer and snowboarder. If you wish to try your hand at jet skiing, wake boarding or just some inflatable towing fun, Berin, is definitely your man to ask.

David Hall – Deckhand

David grew up in Rockport, Maine. He has been around boats his whole life, coming from a long line of mariners. Both his father and grandfather are Captains and David has decided to follow in their footsteps. David joined Dream in the fall of 2009. Do not hesitate to call him "The Kid", the nickname he was given for joining the vessel as the youngest crewmember. When he is not working on deck, he enjoys listening to music, outdoor activities and learning more about history.

Gabe Hale – Deckhand

Gabe has been contributing his hard work and charm to Dream for the past two seasons, having joined us with a year of yachting experience under his belt. Originally from Texas, Gabe and his family moved to Florida back in 2005 where he was subsequently offered a full scholarship for wrestling to study at Oklahoma City University. In his spare time Gabe loves surfing, snowboarding, martial arts, and he is always up for an intense session of wakeboarding. Feel free to ask Gabe to assist or join you in any outdoor activity on Dream!
