About HAWKEYE

Operating in the West Mediterranean

HAWKEYE is a Lagoon 450 sailing catamaran that offers living and deck spaces comparable to power yachts of greater length. The dimensions of this yacht are as impressive as its design, with an LOA of 46 feet (14m) and a 26-foot (8m) beam, this luxury catamaran offers voluminous living space for extraordinary comfort.

Guests will enjoy al fresco dining in the spacious cockpit or sunning with magnificent views from the trampolines. HAWKEYE is designed with contemporary elegance; light woods, creamy paneling and upholstery, and plenty of daylight from the generous array of windows and portholes.

The saloon beckons relaxation. Guests enjoy 360 panoramic views that fully enhance the sailing experience, with vertical glazing for better protection against the sun and optimization of space and headroom. The U-shaped galley provides easy access to the cockpit, perfect for serving both inside and out.

HAWKEYE has been custom-designed especially for charter with a convertible queen-bed cabin in the starboard hull. Charter guests can select one of two configurations when booking HAWKEYE.

The Honeymoon Layout lets a happy couple luxuriate in privacy with the entire hull to themselves. In this configuration the walk-around queen bedroom opens to a cozy sitting area. Private bathroom and shower are positioned forward.

In the alternate configuration as a Family Cabin the seating area is replaced by two slim bunks suitable for children. This is ideal for families with first-time charter kids, or small children that need to feel safe. They love having their own space and yet still being close.

The port hull has a spacious queen-size cabin with private facilities. The port forward cabin's berth can be a double bed or separated into two berths to sleep two people. Cabins are accessible from the saloon, equipped with closets, reading lights, and thoughtful amenities. The exterior offers double walk-around decks, particularly safe and effective transom platforms for coming aboard or accessing the tender, a spacious cockpit on the same level as the galley, with dining and lounging spaces, as well as an upper deck with helm station and large sunbathing area. On the foredeck there is a second cockpit, as well as the trampolines, perfect for lying on and watching the dolphins play below.

HAWKEYE, based in San Remo, is an ideal option for discovering destinations along the fabulous Italian Riviera, especially the Riviera di Levante. Additional itineraries explore the Cote d’Azure, Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily.

The crew aim to provide truly outstanding holidays with a range of activities. They share their in-depth knowledge of ports-of-call; the most exquisite restaurants, best entertainment and amazing shore excursions. Prepare for an unforgettable sailing vacation aboard HAWKEYE!

Crew Profile

Captain: Richard Freeborn (50)

Richard grew up in a very nautical family on the shores of Cornwall. He could row almost as soon as he could walk. His father, a navigating officer in the Merchant Navy during WWII, had him mastering a sextant before he welded a pen. Richard recalls, “We spent most of our time afloat in all types of craft from canoes to sailing boats to a small motor yacht and a speedboat – all of them invariably old, unreliable and leaky, but that didn’t seem to matter.” Although his father has passed, he still treasures that sextant, and still uses it when crossing oceans.

Richard is a highly accomplished captain with an impressive range of certifications. He has held a commercially endorsed MCA Yachtmaster for more than 20 years, suitably certified to command commercial yachts with fare-paying passengers anywhere in the world. For nearly two decades he has been a Race Officer, rising to National Race Officer, with seven years as a Principle Race Officer for Falmouth Race Week. He has completed just about every sailing-related course possible, from first aid to fire-fighting and, of course, advanced navigation with a sextant.

Richard has worked as both super yacht captain and engineer for charter, private, delivery and refit work, in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. He knows intimately the captivating ports of the French and Italian Riviera, Croatia and Greece. Favorite cruising areas include the Balearic Islands, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia. Sailing catamaran Hawkeye, based in San Remo, is perfectly positioned to cruise in any of these enchanting waters. And repeat guests agree, there is no more capable, energetic and fun loving captain to command her than Richard.

First Mate, Hostess, and Chef: Alexandra Blakeman Early (48)

Alexandra grew up in Washington D.C. but summered with her family on Cape Cod every year. They had multiple small sailboats at their summer house, so sailing was second nature to her. “My mother and sister were much happier on land” recalls Alexandra. “Often it was just my father and me, careening around Stage Harbor whenever a good blow came up. I would also crew for my father in dinghy races in the bay just in front of our house. I can still hear him screaming ‘we’re luffing, we’re luffing! Trim the sheet!!” Which she did at an early age with precocious aptitude. In addition to boating, she swam competitively from the age of eight right through to her university swim team, winning the championship three out of her four years.

Charter guests love Alexandra for her charm, intellect, energy and wit. She has a BA in French and International Relations and an MBA. She was a management consultant in the UK, a prestigious position that took her all over the world. In 2009 she made her first extreme change with certification and success in a career in interior design. “Then I met a Cornishman who can sail blind and I never really looked back,” she explains. Looking exclusively toward new horizons, Alexandra became a commercially qualified mariner and married the man of her dreams. She says, “Now we do what we love with the person we love every day of our lives. We are living the dream.”

Alexandra has developed a very discerning eye, especially for attention to detail and making guests comfortable. She is also “quite sporty”, and enjoys swimming, yoga, Pilates or plain calisthenics. When guests feel the urge to get moving she will happily organize a cardio workout that is suitable for all ages. On board Hawkeye, her goal is for everyone to have a fabulous experience, to get guests involved in the yachting life, from planning the day’s itinerary in the morning to organizing charades in the evening. It’s a fact, with Alexandra as First Mate, guests are in for a fun filled, rewarding vacation.

21 May, 2017 Transit from San Remo to Cannes

Following a very kind invitation to join Hawkeye for a reposition to Cannes, Richard and Alexandra welcomed me aboard. Another beautiful Mediterranean day, we slipped the mooring and Alexandra piloted us out to open water. An uneventful motor along the coast past Monaco apart from spotting a sunfish. This was my first experience of a cat and I can see the appeal with a huge saloon and loads of deck space. Richard had obviously been busy as not many yachts have a full size dishwasher, freezer and washing machine however the fridge must work well as the beer was beautifully cold. Very much on my bucket list was a trip along the Cote D'Azur by yacht. Hopefully this is Au Revoir and not Adieu to Hawkeye as I would love to be able to return someday. Wishing you both every success.

8-16 May 2017 - A Week on Hawkeye

What is not to like about cruising along the Cote d’ Azure in absolute comfort on a beautiful catamaran. This is an experience not to be missed with a very experienced and knowledgeable skipper and a wonderfully accommodating first mate / steward we felt welcomed and very confident in our week long cruise. You cannot fail to be bowled over by the space this boat offers with both comfortable inside and exterior areas to enjoy fine food and wine. If you want the space to sunbath in isolation or in company it covers all the bases and you can enjoy ‘sun-downers’ in style no matter what the weather throws at you.A well-appointed and comfortable cabin with air conditioning and ensuite facilities makes for a very pleasant nights sleep. Waking up to breath-taking views as the sun rises with great coffee and a tasty breakfast is certainly a highlight. We particularly enjoyed anchoring off the stunning Lerin Islands and taking the Stand up paddle boards for a paddle around is a great way to enhance taking in the coast and beaches. Travelling to the destination of choice or recommendation is also great fun with the opportunity to see how the boat sails if the wind is in a sensible direction or by engine for convenience.Great food and refreshments are clearly catered for with plenty of ice and chilled beverages always on hand – coupled with the odd run ashore to sample the local cuisine it gave us a trip we will remember fondly and certainly makes us want to enjoy Hawkeye again in the future.

March 2017 – Early Sring Break on Beautiful Hawkeye

It was already almost summer on the French and Italian Riviera when I was lucky to be on board on the gorgeous Hawkeye. Ah the long summers of the Mediterranean…Alexandra and Richard were hosts with the most and one could not imagine a more relaxing and calming environment; the breakfasts and aperitifs on the foredeck, sailing along the beautiful coastline, cozy dinners, and so much space and privacy! They are also experts on the area so there is always a new harbour and town to explore, recommended local restaurants to try and the most scenic spots and views to admire. I took so many photos! Thank you for an unforgettable time on Hawkeye! Hope to see you both soon again!
