HEMISPHERE Crew Profile

Captain/ PADI Dive Instructor – Gavin Bladen

British. Born and raised in the UK, Gavin firsts caught the travel bug in his twenties when he started as a Deckhand on a live-abroad dive boat on the Great Barrier Reef. Since then, he has worked on various yachts on the Great Barrier Reef, out of Cairns, and the Whitsunday Islands. Gavin worked his way up to the Dive Master Level, before becoming a qualified PADI Diving Instructor in 1995. Gavin then travelled to the BVIs in the Caribbean, where he worked on several charter boats, including the 105ft Trimaran CUAN LAW. During late 2003 to early 2004, Gavin started the research into what would become the build of S/Y HEMISPHERE. In June 2004, S/Y HEMISPHERE actually became a live project. Gavin moved to Paris to begin work with the Naval Architects VPLP to develop HEMISPHERE according to the Owner’s wishes. The project took Gavin to the United States and then finally the UK, to the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth. Gavin truly knows this magnificent yacht inside and out. When Gavin is not working he is passionate about all watersports and love travelling and is a very hospitable and personable Captain and host.

First Officer – Harold Steadart

Belgian. Harold studied Chemical Engineering in his hometown, Gent in Belgium and soon after he finished, he left to go sailing and has worked on yachts ever since. Harold has being sailing from a young age, taking part in cruising and racing on smaller yachts, both modern and classic and feels he is incredibly lucky to have turned his hobby into a career. He has worked on sailing yachts for over 11 years, including 47m S/Y LULWORTH and most recently 49.5m S/Y ELEONORA. His is a friendly and experienced sailor and enjoys mountain biking, windsurfing, paragliding and photography. Harold speaks fluent English, French, Dutch and Italian and basic German and Spanish and relishes the opportunity to assist the S/Y HEMISPHERE guests with the wide array of water toys on offer.

Chef – Melinda Heinz

Canadian. Melinda has grown up on the Great Lakes of Canada, Georgian Bay, which is best known for its rustic, natural beauty and some of the best fresh water yachting in the world. After attending the Culinary Arts programme in Vancouver, Melinda started an apprenticeship at the acclaimed Cioppino’s Restaurant. Melinda moved to Toronto and worked as a Pastry Chef at the awarded best restaurant in Toronto. Travelling has always been an important part of Melinda’s life, so she decided to take a job on the prestigious cruise liner, SILVERSEA. After realising her potential, Melinda was asked to take over as the Executive Pastry Chef on board. Melinda then decided to take a break and go back-packing on her own around India and Asia in order to experience, understand and appreciate South-East Asian cuisine. Melinda then travelled to Dubai and accepted a position at the Sheikh’s own Hotel, the Madinat Jumeriah as Executive Pastry Chef. After working in the heat of Saudi Arabia, Melinda headed to the French Alps for cooler climes, following which she headed down to the Cote D’Azur, where she embarked on her career in yachting. Working on the private 75m motor yacht M.Y ILONA for two years allowed Melinda to experience life on the ocean waves, combining both her passion for cooking and travelling all over the world. Melinda can speak basic French and enjoys photography, paddle boarding and also diving since obtaining her open water PADI certificate. In 2011 he made the move into the larger yacht scene where he has worked as a deckhand on M/Y LADY ALISON, M/Y ARENUI and S/Y SUNDARA. Although he is already familiar with the Mediterranean cruising grounds and in particular with Croatia, he is especially excited about travelling to some amazing places on board HEMISPHERE and developing his skills. He promises some great fishing trips on the tender.

PADI Instructor/Deckhand – Quintin Hill

South Africa. Quintin grew up inland; however, his love for the ocean began when he started scuba diving. It did not take him long to decide to turn his new found passion into a career by becoming a Professional Scuba Diving Instructor. After working as a diving instructor for a few years he decided to work in an office for a while, although he soon realised that the ocean was calling and in 2008 he made the decision to start a career in yachting. Starting off as a Deckhand, his previous yachts include 32m M/Y DREAM and 45.7m M/Y SEA DWELLER. He now has over 14 years experience teaching diving. With his extensive knowledge of the PADI system he can train all different levels from beginners to advance. Quintin feels that everyday is an adventure on board S/Y HEMISPHERE, with no two days on the ocean ever the same and he enjoys having the opportunity to dive in some of the most exotic destinations in the world. Other than scuba diving, his hobbies include wakeboarding, snowboarding and yoga.
