Your skipper is 66 and started sailing at the age of 12 in an old wooden sloop which he bought for ten dollars in Cape Town, South Africa.
He has represented South Africa in world competitions in Hawaii, the USA main land and the US Virgin Islands and at home, and raced the 1993 Cape-to-Rio Trans Atlantic. He was a qualified Marine surveyor for Lloyds of London and specialized in Marine Losses.
Gordon has sailed in excess of 100,000 nautical miles, has completed 8 major ocean crossings and has worked, chartered and sailed the Islands of the Caribbean for 20 years, from Trinidad in the South to the British Virgin Islands in the North.
Hobbies and interests are, predictably, sailing and meeting interesting people, water-sports and reading. Gordon is a qualified skipper and has obtained his Yacht Master certifications.
CHEF - Mary Stratford
Mary Stratford grew up on the shores of the Great Lakes where her passion for the sea began.
The cold winters in the Midwest finally drove her south and in 1985 Mary settled in the Caribbean. Her culinary skills started in her Grandmothers kitchen, where they cooked, baked and created elaborate meals together, much to the delight of family and friends and neighbors.
Mary has worked in various five-star star restaurants in the United States as Chef, waitress and bartender.
She used all of her knowledge of fine dining and started working as Chef on Yachts all over the world.Mary has done 3 transatlantic crossings, as far East as Turkey and as far West as Alaska. She has been a N.A.U.I. certified diver since 1987 and loves water sports.
Between her busy charter schedule Mary lives in the foothills of El Yunque National Forest on the east side of Puerto Rico and is an acclaimed Potter.
CREW - James McFarlane
James Jarredt McFarlane was born in Gauteng, South Africa. While he was still young, his family relocated to Cape Town, where he immediately gravitated towards the water. He started off sailing as an eight year old, through the Sea Scout chapter of the International Boy Scout Association. It was there his love of sailing developed and he decided on it as a future career.
Immediately after finishing his formal schooling, James got busy completing the numerous safety and sailing courses required to start him on his career. At the tender age of 18, he completed his first delivery on a four man catamaran from Cape Town to Fort Lauderdale, USA.
Today, as crew on Liberté, James constantly appreciates the privilege of working on such a beautiful yacht in a beautiful part of the world. He relishes his daily tasks, and plans on building on his qualifications until he has a captain's license of his own. A total outdoorsman at heart, he enjoys water skiing, wakeboarding, hiking, fishing and being out on the ocean.
James has been nicknamed "Dr. McFarlane" by guests for his specialty cocktails, which seem to be the ultimate therapy while watching the sun set over the Caribbean Sea after a perfect day in the water.
James is quietly exuberant, with an easy going and friendly nature. He is dedicated to making your stay on board Liberté an enjoyable and truly unforgettable vacation. He aims to provide the highest level of service and cater to all your needs.
