MA HA Crew Profile
Your crew, Deb and Andy, met while working on charter yachts, they’ve been at it for four years now, both in the British Virgin Islands and Europe. Between them they have travelled North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Asia. After working on different yachts based from the same dock, one day they had the bright idea that they ought to come together and combine the best of their professionalism. And they came to do this aboard Ma Ha.For both Andy and Deb, the love of sailing and working on the water led them each to a career in charter yachts. They pride themselves on keeping a friendly and family atmosphere on Ma Ha, and enjoy meeting new people and making new friends on charter.Step aboard Ma Ha and you will feel relaxed and safe in the capable hands of Chef Deb and Captain Andy as they weave your dreams and you sail, explore and experience the secrets of the Caribbean. Please! Step aboard.
About Andy
Andy grew up in a travelling family, spending his youth in both Canada and England. Family vacations across North America, coupled with growing up on a lakeshore, soon instilled in Andy both a wanderlust and a passion for sailing. At a young age he was cruising with his parents from the northern U.S to South America following their retirement. Sailing… Travel… It gets more eclectic… At university Andy pursued a degree in technical theatre and ended up with a degree in business management. It didn’t take long for Andy to decide that office life was not for him. Perhaps it was the wanderlust element, Andy followed his passion for the one thing he had really enjoyed his entire life: Sailing (Guests will soon discover that Andy is pretty gadget-happy too, whether it’s the latest iPad, gee-whizz computer gizmo, camera attachment, iPhone app, GPS or electronic game, Andy’s the one that wants it or has it, but you’ll also find him sharing his technical expertise widely and freely).
Attending a sailing school on the yachting mecca of the Isle of Wight, Andy quickly completed his 200 Ton Master’s License and worked in England and southern France before heading to the Caribbean. He was quickly snapped up and found himself chartering extensively aboard a variety of catamarans. Eventually, Andy succumbed to the lure of Ma Ha… He hasn’t looked back. Aboard Ma Ha, other than the sailing, Andy particularly enjoys the life-long friends he’s made, people that started out as charter guests, and of course assisting people in experiencing their Caribbean dreams.
A recent guest wrote of Andy: “I wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know what an exceptional skipper you have in Andrew Ball. I am sure that you don’t need me to tell you that Andrew is an excellent sailor and maintains your yacht with meticulous vigor. What you may not know, is how far Andrew goes to ensure his guests’ happiness.”
Andy looks forward to welcoming you up Ma Ha’s gangway.
About Deb
Deb grew up on the picturesque South Island of the sailing-mad nation of New Zealand. She cut her yachting teeth early, on Marlborough Sound and the Cook Strait, and has a lifetime of sea and sailing experiences. She was even the Rear Commodore of her local yacht club. Early on Deb determined her destination… Crew and/or chef on racing, cruising, delivery, and charter yachts. Her two passions - the love of sailing and cooking – create a bountiful combination aboard Ma Ha. Couple this with her gentle manner to her charter guests, and what Deb describes as “Kiwi ingenuity and lateral thinking”, as well as her culinary training (She’s also trained in Asian cuisine!) and that sounds like a recipe for a sumptuous charter week!
Deb’s other qualifications include her Boatmaster’s ticket from the Royal Yachting Association, and her extensive experience as chef on crewed yachts sailing from New Zealand, the Caribbean islands and most recently throughout the Mediterranean. Naturally, she follows with enthusiasm the interests of her two sons, and New Zealand’s “All Blacks” Rugby national team!
The cuisine from Deb's galley reflects her belief in "home-made" and her presentation will tantalize your taste buds… You won't be disappointed.
Andy and Deb welcome you aboard catamaran Ma Ha.
MA HA Testimonials
Guests aboard Ma Ha for Christmas week, 2011.
I just completed a charter on Ma Ha, your beautiful yacht. First, thank you for making it available. I own a home on the ocean in Maine that I rent from time to time, and I know the angst it can cause.
I wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know what an exceptional skipper you have in Andrew Ball. It can be very difficult for an absentee owner to evaluate management, so I thought I would share my observations with you. I am sure that you don't need me to tell you that Andrew is an excellent sailor and maintains your yacht with meticulous vigor. What you may not know, is how far Andrew goes to ensure your guests happiness. By way of example, I wanted to surprise my wife with a massage. Andrew arranged to pick up a masseuse on the tender, bring him on board, and then return him after the massage. When the time came, there were substantial swells and I fully expected to have cancel the massage. Andrew wouldn't hear of it. Instead he donned foul weather gear, brought an extra set for the masseuse and braved the elements. This was but one of many examples.
I thought you should know. Happy Holidays and best wishes for the new year.

What an incredible “once in a lifetime” Christmas/New Year experience we had! My family and I would 1000% recommend Andrew and Jennifer to anyone looking for a wonderfully personalized charter experience. They were both knowledgeable, professional and fun to be with. They worked together like a well oiled machine which made life very easy and comfortable on the boat. It is unusual that each of my four children had only positive comments about both of them! We really enjoyed their company.
When we arrived, Andrew and Jennifer were there to greet us with open arms and smiles. The Ma Ha was beautiful, comfortable and immaculately kept throughout the charter.
The meals were so delicious. Jennifer is an excellent chef and each meal surpassed our expectations. She really labored over presentation and making sure that all of our food requests were met. My kids are still talking about the Thai lunch we had. We may have to call her for the recipe! There was never a meal that we did not enjoy.
Andrew was very accommodating with any request we may have had. When my one son was sick, he readily took my younger son tubing for the afternoon. He has a lovely disposition and was friendly and wonderful with the kids. Both Andrew and Jennifer were awesome about getting us great reservations for New Year’s Eve. We shared dinner with them on shore and we rang in the New Year with our new friends!
From the immediate attention from >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> to the friendly phone call from Jen about last minute food needs right before the trip, to the impeccable service and treatment from Andrew and Jennifer, our trip was the perfect family vacation.
I would recommend Andrew and Jennifer, the crew of the Ma Ha to anyone who will listen! I hope to book another charter next year with them!!
Sincerely,
Susan McGinley
