ODESSA Crew Profile
Captain Michael Whiteley
After commanding his first yacht around the pristine waters of British Columbia, Canada back in 1989, Michael enjoyed it so much he put a career in maritime law on hold and shortly after graduating went cruising. Already an experienced mariner, he joined a cruise ship sailing out of Los Angeles as third mate, building experience and knowledge while working towards a Master Mariner level captains certificate. Achieving that goal in 1997 meant that by rights, according to plan he should settle down to ‘sail a desk’ at a law firm– however, a ‘wind shift came through’ when he was offered a promotion to the legendary ocean liner “QE2”. He sailed as First Officer aboard Cunard Cruise Line’s flagship for the following two years.
Coming back into yachting aboard the m/y Izanami in 1999, Michael found yachting had moved up a notch while he had been sailing the seven seas on cruise ships – it was now called superyachting for one thing; the yachts were bigger, more stylish, more sophisticated and crews more professional. Here was an opportunity to spend just a few more years “out there” – he never went back. Another five large yachts have followed since Izanami, the last of which included a three year world cruise.
Taking command of Odessa only recently, he was immediately impressed by the award winning style the yacht projects and as a conniseur of yachts is enjoying being on a yacht with high standards. More importantly, he is enjoying what he does best … cruising in search of the perfect beach. He hopes he never finds it.
Troy Dougherty
Chief Mate
Troy is your 1st Officer on board M/Y Odessa. After being raised on a small island off the coast of Queensland, Australia, it is no surprise that Troy has found himself working in an industry that is surrounded by water. He has been working in the yachting industry since April 2005 and has worked on various yachts within that time such as Capella C (195ft), Dolce Far Niente (193ft), and Mystique (165ft), cruising the Mediterranean, Caribbean (as far south as Venezuela) and the US East coast as far North as Maine before joining M/Y Odessa in January 2010.
After stumbling on the yachting industry while backpacking around Europe, he quickly fell in love with the yachting lifestyle, as it caters to two of Troy’s passions, travel and meeting new people. Troy’s interests include everything aquatic, as well as Rugby, Climbing, and exploring new destination.
Troy currently holds his 200t Unlimited Captains ticket as well as his Chief Mate 3000t license, and is working toward his 500t Masters ticket. With Troy’s experience and “get out there and do it” attitude, he will ensure that your time on board Odessa exceeds expectation.
Nick Taylor
Chief Engineer
Nick Taylor was born in England and grew up with a public school background.
He joined Cunard Shipping Company in 1977. After 10 years of deep sea service Nick changed careers, came ashore and spent the next 1o or more in Sales including 3 years as an Independent Financial Advisor. Another business venture took Nick into property development and Letting where he formed his own company.
Nick has now been in the Super Yachting industry for about 12 years working on both privately owned and Charter yachts. Nick’s last tour of duty was 8 years on a 43m Feadship called ‘Masquerade of Sole’, the largest a 59m yacht called ‘Senses’.
As a keen designer, Nick has designed 9 houses and built 5 so far and recently oversaw a 3-year refit of his own boat, including all the design work for both the interior and exterior, creating a totally bespoke yacht.
Over and above Nick’s 22 years of Yacht and Commercial Shipping experience he has also spent 11 years living on a 38ft Broom river cruiser which is still his current UK home.
Colette Schnabel
2nd Stewardess
Colette was born in Monterey, California. Since then she has lived in the Northwest, South and Mid-West of America. At twenty she decided it was time for her to start her own adventures. Colette moved to St Thomas, U.S.V.I, where she fell in love with the warm weather of the Caribbean. She worked as a snorkel guide for a day charter company and a bartender at the yacht marina. That is where Colette was introduced to the yachting industry. After two years in St. Thomas she decided to move to Florida and pursue a career as a Stewardess.
Colette has worked on private and charter yachts including; Motor Yachts Iris and Allegria, traveling all over the East coast of America, Caribbean, and a large portion of the Mediterranean. Colette has also ventured off on her own travels which have taken her to Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Panama, and Egypt. She enjoys hiking, surfing, camping, and cooking.
Colette’s enthusiastic attitude, outgoing personality and legendary bartending skills make her a must have on any charter adventure.
Courtney White
3rd Stewardess
Courtney originally hails from Dallas, Texas. Her adventures began when she left home to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management at Texas Tech University. Upon completion of her degree, she felt the need to begin to explore the world and introduce herself to new cultures and countries. And thus the adventure continued with a year of cruising aboard a small cruise ship as a stewardess and bartender. After visiting so many wonderful harbors and seeing so many beautiful yachts, she decided to pursue a stewardess career on various mega yachts including Oasis and Four Jacks, allowing her to fulfill her passions in the elite hospitality industry, appreciation for fine wine and cuisine, and desire to explore the world. Thus far, her travels have taken her to Australia, Canada, The Great Lakes, U.S. Eastern Seaboard, Caribbean, and Central America. Aside from travelling, other interests and hobbies of Courtney’s include yoga, diving, wakeboarding, hiking, sailing, and any other outdoor activities. Her friendly and welcoming demeanor, fun attitude, eye for details, and fantastic drink cocktails to fit any mood and quench any thirst are just a few of the attributes that make her a great complement to the Odessa team.
Michael Pelon
Bosun
Born and raised in Michigan, Mike grew up on the water of the Great Lakes. After graduating high school he decided to begin a long term career in yachting, leaving the Mid West for Florida and began his career on Odessa in October 2009. Odessa has become Mike’s second home, and he has become an integral member of her crew while gaining valuable experience as Odessa cruised the waters of the Bahamas, Caribbean and Mediterranean.
Mike has applied himself off the yacht also, using his spare time to gain his Yachtmaster 200t Offshore captain’s license as well as his Applied Engineering Course, and it this dedication to his career that has seen him climb the ranks on Odessa to the position of Bosun.
You will notice Mike’s passion for the water, and he loves to teach others the watersports he learned growing up on the lakes including water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing and fishing, and is always striving to ensure your stay on Odessa is a pleasurable one.
Campbell Cameron
2nd Engineer/Deckhand
Campbell is a 25 year old country boy who grew up in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Every summer himself and his family travelled to the Shushwap lakes in British Columbia Canada where his passion for the water grew every year. After completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta and realizing that the oil and gas industry is just not for him he decided that a life on the water is the only way to live. Once completing his STCW 95 safety training and the MCA Approved Engine Course he was hired by Odessa as the 2nd Engineer/Deckhand. He is thrilled by the chance to get some hands on experience under a skilled Chief Engineer while continuing to enjoy his love for the water.
Matthew Burns
Chef
Matthew trained in Ottawa Canada at restaurant eighteen. For 10 years he has been in the industry and has no plans to stop any time soon. His mouth watering menus have a lot to do with his dedication to his work. Having grandparents from Italy taught him from a very young age, that food is a very big part of the family. On that note, his specialty is fresh Mediterranean cuisine, and after recently working in the British Virgin Islands and South America, has added this influence to the variety of dishes Matt is looking forward to serving up during your stay on Odessa. For those guests with a curiosity for all things culinary, Matt is open to sharing his passion and cooking lessons can be a fun way to “add a bit of flavor” to your holiday.
Bon appetite!
