CAPTAIN: MICHAEL TEWS


 


Captain Mike grew up in the Pacific Northwest where he developed a deep appreciation of the water and water sports.  After military duty, Captain Mike pursued a career in the yachting industry beginning as first mate, then engineer, dive master and finally Captain. He has cruised extensively the waters of the east coast US, Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean where he especially enjoys the warm waters.  Captain Mike is a PADI Dive master and also enjoys spear fishing, golf and surfing.


 


ENGINEER: ALBERTO ARENCIBIA


Born in Bahia de Cabana, Cuba, Alberto comes from a family of fisherman and has always spent his career on the water. Alberto began his studies in the Cuban Naval Academy top of his class and became a Naval Instructor for the Academy with all the certifications that OMI offers. Within the next 25 years he has been captain-engineer on a 100 foot tug boat that delivered supplies around Cuba. Alberto has worked as Engineer and Captain on several sailboats, catamarans (65-72’) for the very successful Stardust Charter Company and Sunsail Charters. Alberto came to the United States in 2003 and continued his love of the sea in the yachting world where for the past 5 years he ran three yachts ranging from 75’ – 110’ Broward. As an engineer he is meticulous about maintaining the systems on the vessel. When Alberto is not working in the engine room he enjoys fishing, diving, music, dancing, cooking and talking to his daughter in Cuba and just being on the water.

CHIEF STEWARD: SOREN JOHANSSON


In 1988 Soren started as a Head Waiter at one of Stockholm’s top restaurants and moved on to Bar Manager for several years. He began his yachting career 12 years ago onboard M/Y Lambda Mar, traveling the Mediterranean, Maldives, Seychelles, Indonesia, and the Caribbean. Soren left yachting for three years as a Butler in the United States for a high profile family. A member of the Swedish Bartenders Association, missing the water he loves so much he returned to the yachting world in 2003 to work onboard M/Y INDULGENCE. When Soren isn’t cruising the seven seas, you will find him fishing, snorkeling, race car driving. Soren has a great sense of humor and loves to meet new people. Over the years he has acquired an extensive knowledge of food and wine which he loves to share. Try his famous mojito’s and his margarita’s are to die for, so up your insurance policy prior to boarding!


SECOND STEW: KATE COLE MARTIN


Kate graduated from Elon University in North Carolina, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies.  She has experience in various areas of the service industry, as well as with children.  Above many yacht safety, etiquette and service courses, Kate also has a PADI Open Water Dive Certification.  She enjoys outdoor sports, meeting new people, scuba diving, cooking, traveling, photography and music.


FIRST MATE: GILBERTO SARDINAS


Gilberto, also known as Gilly, was born in Cuba. His love of the sea lured him in 1986, when he began working on passenger boats around Havana Harbor. Gilly attended the Cuban Naval Academy and graduated top of his class with High Honors. For the next 16 years he furthered his career sailing around the Caribbean and then to Spain, progressing from Mate to Captain-Engineer learning his skills from sailboats and catamarans to powerboat cruising charters. Gilly’s expertise in yacht refinishing brought him in to the yachting world in 2003, where he has used his skills to become a successful mate, engineer, and Captain. Always involved in all activities onboard, Gilly’s priority is to ensure fun activities like jet skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, sighing trips, and more! When Gilly is not working he enjoys swimming, cycling, music, dancing, photography and traveling.


DECKHAND-DIVE INSTRUCTOR: ERIC BYL


Eric is new to the yachting world but not new to the sea. He started diving in 2003 and became one of the youngest PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors! In 2007 Eric moved from British Columbia, Canada, to Tortola, BVI, to run a dive boat and teach diving at Aquaventures. Eric brings his love and knowledge of diving to SOVEREIGN, and will ensure the guests diving and snorkeling trips will be filled with adventure, complemented by his knowledge of some of the Caribbean’s best diving spots. When Eric is not diving he enjoys fishing, photography, music, dancing and traveling to new places. Eric is a great addition to the crew of Sovereign.
