SYMPHONY II Crew Profile
Captain Barry John Miller- Captain/Engineer/Dive Master
Captain Barry hails from sunny Durban, South Africa and has been involved in yachting for as long as he can remember. The water is a Miller family passion, and he chose sailing over surfing at the age of eight. He spent his childhood on the water with his father and brother, competing in numerous sailing regattas including multiple Vasco Da Gama’s held off of the coast of Mozambique. At the age of 16, Barry was sponsored to participate in the prestigious Lipton Cup. After high school he traveled the Eastern shores of the United States and enjoyed sailing in various regattas, working with both power and sailing yachts.
On one of his visits home, Barry met his future wife Bridget and decided to return with her to the waters abroad. The two headed to the Caribbean and have been in command of some of the most successful and highly regarded charter yachts since 2005. Barry has been fortunate to work as Captain/Engineer with his wife as chef/hostess on various size yachts, navigating through the waters of the Caribbean and Mediterranean. This experience has enriched his navigational, mechanical and cultural skills, as his responsibility encapsulated all aspects of running and managing a multitude of yachts.
Barry holds his MCA 200ton license, South African offshore costal skippers’ license, he is also a PADI certified Dive Master. He enjoys competitive sailing, diving, traveling, photography and sports. From the moment guests step foot on Captain Barry’s yacht, they will experience a vacation unlike any other. He has worked diligently to build what many in the industry consider a dream team. Symphony II and its crew will exceed the expectations of even the most discerning guests.
Daniel Bowditch- Chief Engineer/1st Mate/Dive Instructor
Dan is from London, England where he served for over 10 years as a heroic firefighter in the United Kingdom. He enjoyed his career immensely, which instilled in him the highest level of professionalism, responsibility and teamwork that he now brings to Symphony II. A career break from the fire service took Dan to South America and Morocco, North Africa. There, he led multi-cultural groups of travelers, often up to 24 people, on overland adventure expeditions lasting up to three months at a time, throughout the continent in an ex-military personnel carrier.
A different challenge awaited Dan as he obtained a Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster qualification (commercially endorsed) off the coast of South Africa in 2009. His successful completion led Dan and Suzie to deliver yachts on South Atlantic crossings from Cape Town, South Africa to the beautiful waters of the Caribbean. They eventually landed in The British Virgin Islands where Dan and Suzie were offered the positions of Captain and 1stMate/Chef. This appointment launched them both into a successful career in the charter yacht industry, allowing them to travel extensively throughout the vast chain of Caribbean Islands.
Dan is a PADI certified open water diving instructor and loves to dive at every opportunity. Being a keen photographer and outdoors enthusiast, he has learned that he enjoys mountains as much as he enjoys the water…leading him to a newly discovered love – Motorcycles!
Chef - Bio to follow
Bridget Kane-Berman- Chief Stewardess/Dive Master/Deck
Bridget, like her husband Barry, was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. After achieving her Degree, Cum Laude, in Media, Cultural and Legal studies from the University of Natal, she decided to leave her home to join her love abroad, entering the yachting industry. Having never left South Arica and upon hearing the word “Caribbean,” Bridget needed very little persuasion. This choice would lead to an entirely new life, allowing her to discover her biggest passion, traveling! Bridget has worked as a chef, stewardess and dive master alongside Barry for almost a decade. She is a certified PADI dive master, Royal Yachting Association day skipper, and has her catering credentials from Penn Foster.
Bridget is a very gregarious person and has an insatiable zest for life. Photography, snorkeling, diving, hiking, traveling, film, writing and food are just a few of her loves! For recommendations on great hikes, restaurants, spas, snorkeling, diving, shopping and other shore excursions, look no further than Bridget.
In her own words, Bridget says… “To work in the charter industry, you truly have to be a chameleon, adapting to the individual diversity of guests, shifting your personality and skills to give each special group a unique and unforgettable experience. Enthusiasm and attention to detail are so important and essentially the reason why our guests can’t wait to spend time with us again and again. Everyone aboard Symphony II has a distinctive set of skills that create a true five-star experience, making memories that will last a lifetime.”
Suzie Ridler- Stewardess / Event Planner /Deck
Suzie was born and raised in South East England. Her background has included work within the banking industry, orchestrating and executing corporate events. She is also a qualified personal trainer and sports massage therapist.
With a passion for adventure and exploration, she and Dan took the plunge in 2009, trading in their landlocked careers and redirecting their attention to water. Suzie traveled to South Africa to experience “extreme sailing” and obtained her Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster qualification (commercially endorsed). She then embarked on a transatlantic crossing from Cape Town, South Africa to her current home in the Caribbean. Venturing into the world of chartering as chef/first mate/stewardess, she and Dan have built a reputation for providing impeccable first class service with a smile.
Suzie loves to cook and trained at the Gables School of Cookery in Gloucester, England. She has mastered the fine art of entertaining and catering on yachts. As stewardess, her goal is to be attentive to her guests on Symphony II, always anticipating their needs and exceeding expectations.
As an accomplished competitive swimmer, she always enjoys the opportunity to jump in the water and loves to welcome guests aboard Symphony II to experience the islands. Suzie loves to invite her guests to “relax as hard as they like!.”II.
