TIVOLI Crew Profile
Captain John Spenlinhauer
A genial host and knowledgeable guide as well as a professional captain, John Spenlinhauer looks forward to welcoming you aboard TIVOLI.
John is a lifelong yachtsman, having first learned to sail as a boy on the waters surrounding Cape Cod. He went on to own a succession of classic sailboats, including a beautiful 71-foot wooden Sangermani yawl which he captained many times from Maine to the Caribbean and back.
When the time came to plan for even more extended, long-distance cruising, he decided to have an oceangoing expedition motor yacht built. The luxurious and sea-kindly TIVOLI is the result of his determination to create a vessel that is ideal both for making offshore passages and for visiting the harbors of the world in complete comfort.
John is not only a fully qualified captain ? he holds a U.S. Coast Guard Captain?s License ? he also has exceptional experience in cruising the entire Caribbean, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, the Baltic including Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the Western coast of Europe, including Germany, Holland, France, Northern coast of Spain, Portugal and the U.S. East Coast.
Having been involved in yacht chartering for three decades, he has spent many years exploring the very best places to cruise and can take you to delightful little-known anchorages as well as all of the must-visit destinations. He also knows his way around ashore, and will be happy to tell you about special out-of-the-way places when you are planning your sightseeing.
A graduate of Boston College, John enjoyed a successful career in the printing industry and for many years owned, with his brother, one of the largest web offset printers in the U.S.
John stands ready to do everything he can to see that your cruise aboard TIVOLI is one of your most memorable vacations. It will be his distinct pleasure to share with you his enthusiasm for traveling by sea and the always-fresh excitement of discovering new ports of call.
Captain/Mate: Trevor Marston
As a guest aboard Tivoli, you?ll learn that Trevor has a gift for sensing just the kind of Vacation you have in mind. He will quickly sense your personality?s styles and moods and will tailor your stay perfectly and then stir in some special treats and surprises to make your time on board truly exceptional. If you are ready for a totally relaxing interlude Trevor and his professional crew will dedicate themselves to creating a blissfully pampering atmosphere for you. With an outgoing manner and wry sense of humour (he?s been known to tell a good sea story or two), Trevor will make you feel entirely at home right away. In addition to manning the helm and seeing that everything is always shipshape, he will be your genial guide and gracious host, always at your service when you need him, ever discreet when you don?t.
Trevor?s love of the sea came from his Father and Grandfather who were both in the Royal Navy it was inevitable that he also joined and served for 25 years. After leaving he worked in the Gas fire industry but the call of the sea was never far away and with a Partner started a very successful Royal Yachting Association sailing school and Yacht charter business in his home town of Weymouth in Dorset. During his time running the school he got himself a very good reputation teaching less privileged and handicapped young adults how to sail. After doing several trans-Atlantic crossings and sailing around the Caribbean and North America he joined Tivoli.
Trevor?s attention to detail and both he and his crews professional attitude will ensure that your time aboard Tivoli provides you with memories you?ll treasure forever.
Chef Caren Sharpen
Chef Caren Sharpen is originally from Cape Town, South Africa, and while a trained chef, worked for many years in the corporate world as a Human Resources Manager. Making the decision that it was time to pursue her dreams of travel and adventure, Caren crewed on several Trans- Atlantic crossings from South Africa to the Caribbean and also from the US to the Caribbean.
Always longing to return to the sunshine and turquoise waters, Caren decided to try her hand at being a Caribbean charter chef, where she could utilize her management and interpersonal skills and culinary training whilst satisfying her longing for adventure.
Caren is also a certified Dive Master and is more than willing to accompany guests on rendezvous dive excursions and share her passion for diving with first time and experienced divers alike.
Caren looks forward to welcoming guests aboard TIVOLI and impressing them with culinary treats from and array of international cuisines - Africa and the Mediterranean!
Mate / Deckhand Joseph Bittman
Having grown up in the lake district of Orlando, Florida Joseph has always had an enthusiasm for the water and boats. An avid wake-boarder and fisherman, Joe joined the United States Coast Guard upon graduating from high school.
Serving in the Coast Guard Joe?s love for being on the water grew, and he quickly advanced to second class boatswains mate with qualifications in seamanship and first aid. After completing his four year enlistment Joe began working in the yachting industry in St. Petersburg, Florida doing yacht deliveries and working boat shows for a prominent yacht dealership. This experience helped Joe to develop an eye for detail and passion for excellence which he brings to his position on motor yacht TIVOLI.

Thank you again for a fabulous 10 days of amazing everything. And several firsts for us . . . the trip to the Rookery was definitely a highlight for me as well as the Coco Point lunch and evening under the stars in the Jacuzzi. It cannot get any better than that.

John, Trevor, Caren and Joe;
Thanks so much for a great week. The boat is beautiful and the scenery exceptional!
Thank you for taking us to our quiet hideaways on Barbuda, it was perfect for the relaxing vacation that we craved. Thanks to the crew for taking care of our every need and especially Caren for keeping our bellies full of fabulous meals and snacks….and Joe for the best Irish Coffees.
* From St. John’s Newfoundland, Canada to St. John’s Antigua – the temperature was vastly different – but the people like the Newf’s are incredibly kind and caring.
We could not have asked for a better crew and trip. “Long may your big jib draw.”

Greetings from the North!!! Needless to say, I really miss my tropical sun filled morning coffee time. It's 40 and pouring rain here at the moment, but at least it's not snow. :) Our trip home was flawless as was our time on board. I find myself closing my eyes only to picture the Caribbean aqua waters, the beautiful sky, warm delightful breezes and Caren's cooking!
Then the harsh reality sets in along with the returning dry skin and what to plan for dinner. Oh well... Thank you again for a fabulous 10 days of amazing everything. And several firsts for us....the trip to the Rookery was definitely a highlight for me, as well as the Coco Point lunch and evening under the stars in the Jacuzzi. It cannot get any better than that.

"We are now all back in London and more or less over the jetlag. Looking back at all the pictures that we took over the past week with you and Tivoli makes us realize even more what a wonderful time we had. Oscar especially enjoyed his swimming and many new adventures and experiences and your whole crew was wonderful in making this happen. Trevor spent a lot of time playing and having fun with Oscar and played a significant part in making the trip for us. Hope to see you all in Maine this summer."
-- Charter guest Winter 2011 Caribbean
"Sam and I were both delighted with our stay on board Tivoli, so were our guests. As you said the boat was beautifully presented. John and the crew were great company! and the level of service and standard of food excellent. We are so pleased we chose Tivoli to hold our wedding ceremony and spend our honeymoon, I would highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to have a private ceremony."
-- Charter Guest Winter 2011 Caribbean
"We all arrived back safely and want to thank you and all the crew for the hard work and hospitality during our recent stay with you. Each individual contributed to our time with you and they were all very good with the children, especially Oscar. In particular, Trevor did an excellent job and we think he was extremely valuable. If Norway is not on the cards this summer, I hope to see you somewhere in the Gulf of Maine."
-- Christmas / New Years 2010-11 charter
"Thank you for a smooth and wounderful cruising week – for ferrying me to and from my little yacht “Purity”; for keeping me well feed, showered and in great “spirits” (in both respects) Tivoli is a lovely yacht and I look forward to seeing you and her in New Bedford. "I've chartered 8, maybe 9 times....and this was by far the best charter we have had. The boat worked perfectly for our race committee, and the crew was delightful."
-- August 2010 Race Committee
"This week has been extraordinary. As you know, cruising the Maine coast, was a long held dream of ours. Being aboard Tivoli certainly exceeded expectations, and expectations were high. Tivoli, itself, is a marvel. So luxuriously comfortable, yet with its steel hull, magnificiently safe and stable over high seas, a real plus for the week kneed ! Your crew is a well chosen group, all kind and polite, but so much more; there combined talents greatly enhanced out time aboard. From a ready hand or smile, to the delicious meals, we where beautifully served throughout our adventure. Thank you for making our dream come so alive ! Many memories were made onboard, sure to bring happy recounting in the weeks and months ahead. With great appreciation !"
